About the Deceiver / Saltwater Fly
Author: Unknown
DECEIVERS AND SALTWATER FLIES
The deceiver pattern is one of the best known and oldest fly patterns in saltwater fly fishing. This pattern has many strengths going for it.
The pattern can be used to imitate a specific species of bait fish, a category of bait fish or a general bait fish imitation. There is no one style or pattern. Most recently, freshwater fisherman have begun using "tiny" deceivers for trout and have been well rewarded!
Deceivers take fish everywhere. Fresh or salt, bay or ocean or lake, day or night, the deceiver is effective.
The fly's design makes it very durable. It can take the punishment of big game fish, even toothy critters, over and over without the need to put on a new fly after each fish. That's not to say it's indestructible, just that a deceiver can usually last a longer time than some other more delicate patterns.
No matter how big the deceiver fly is, the very shape of a deceiver makes for a lower profile when casting. This translates into a longer cast than you could get with some other patterns of similar size.
The ocean hatches very few insects. Saltwater flies generally represent various types of streamers that represent baitfish, crustaceans like shrimp, lobster or crabs. They range in size from one inch to over a foot in length. The effort is to offer the fish something in size that makes the fish feel it is worth chasing. A large sailfish is not going to be interested in a small fly you would use to catch a bonefish.
One should attempt to offer flies that typically resemble the local forage fish. The use of bright colored patterns may initiate an attack by the local predator fish in the area. Deceiver patterns resemble baitfish and are an excellent choice to catch stripers in the coastal rivers and bays.
