The Cicada is a great way to catch big fish during the summer. From mid-May to late July these large bugs hatch. During this time of year fish these trout flies throughout the country in larger sizes. They are big bugs so don’t be afraid to fish a heavier tippet like 5x. Twitch them or focus on creating a dead drift. There’s no need to worry about making a splash on the water when you cast these flies. Cicadas do that naturally when they hit the water. Look for these bugs attached to trees and look around for their husks on the ground. If you see or hear cicadas, be sure to tie one on. They will often catch the biggest fish in the river.
